Careful trompe l’oeil is hardly an artist’s technique you expect a tagger to employ in his graffiti work. But these often miscalculated and misunderstood artists have a lot to teach the world about style and artful urban transformation with a message. D.O.C.S
(Doing Only Crooked Shit) is the graffiti...

What happens when an artist loses his or her creative
currency – the capacity for self-expression? That's exactly what
happened to legendary Los Angeles graffiti artist Tony Quan, a.k.a.
Tempt One, when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. As he began to lose use of
his a...

A sticker, like
the one above, was found on an airport trashcan, raising concern among
security officials. (Photo courtesy Rene Gagnon)
A sticker found on a trash can at a Washington, D.C., airport last
week depicting what appeared to be a suicide bomber is actually the logo
of a popular graffiti artist. His fans have plastered his stickers
around the world since around 2005.
The sticker caused a bit of stir among Department of Homeland

Shepard Fairey hasn't always been considered the street
artist's Street Artist (in the way Burt Reynolds is a Man's Man). The
meld between Fairey's multi-million dollar clothing company and the
propagandist graffiti he does irks the hell out of many "true" graffiti
artists (it could also have something to do with this ad
campaign he did for Saks last year). Which leads us to the subject
of this post: Since...

On 7 June, FNCC goes to the streets with its
latest exhibition called Urban Decay, the exhibition will showcast
graffiti art by G*** R*** aka Real. Born in 1982 in London, Real has had
a passion for graffiti all his life. He started out like most graffiti
artists by spraying his tag on walls but soon got fed up with spraying
on walls and cars for the sake of it. The desire to have his works
regonised prompted him to...

Shadi caught one of New Yorks top bombers in action last winter.
I decided to go out and take photos at 5am during the
snow storm and I noticed a shadowy figure in the darkness was doing his
thing. I noticed him one second and the next he was gone. A few days
later I noticed what he finished what he started.

Shepard Fairey
has had a roller-coaster year. The Echo Park-based street artist
reached a career apex when his Obama “Hope” poster was inducted in the
Smithsonian, followed by a survey of his work at Boston’s Institute of
Contemporary Art, but lately Fairey has been dealing with the fallout
over a public battle with the Associated Press regarding propriety of
the “Hope” image.
Overshadowed by all the hoopla, Fairey has headed a clothing lab...

Over 300,000 people
saw the exhibition of works by “guerilla” graffiti artist Banksy at
Bristol museum and art gallery this summer. The number of visitors,
queuing for up to six hours, approached the total population of the
city in the west of England.
Banksy
has undergone a meteoric rise to fame. His unknown identity and
nocturnal spray-painting activities have all added to the mystique
surroundin...

Dick Blick Art, Montana Cans and East Bay Express hosted a great mix
of Bay Area old school graffiti legends and up and coming talent!
Estria Miyashiro, Max Ehrman Eon 75, Jared Roses, and Mel Waters all
came through and hit up giant 4-sided canvas “cubes” with their own
unique styles.
At the Montana Gold table, party people could stop by and drop their
name in our Montana “guestbooks” using Montana Hardcore markers and
Sharpies.
